How to Choose the Right Dog Kennel / Run There are a number of factors to consider when selecting a dog kennel. First, you want to give careful consideration to the needs of your pet to ensure its comfort and safety: Kennel Size and Shape – Kennel size is generally restricted by the available space in your yard or facility.

Generally speaking, you can’t really have a kennel that is too big, however, it is certainly possible to have one that is too small to meet your pet’s needs. A kennel that is too small will create anxiety in your pet and will discourage it from feeling secure in its kennel. Consideration should be given to the size of the dog, the number of dogs enclosed in the kennel, and the relative energy level of the dog(s).

Common sense dictates that larger and more energetic dog breeds need more space than smaller, less active breeds. Hyper dogs or those with lots of energy will prefer a long skinny kennel to a shorter square kennel as the longer length will provide more room to run.

Consideration should also be given to the time the dog will spend in the kennel. A short term stay in a small kennel for even a very large breed of dog is generally fine, but a day long stay in a small kennel would not be appropriate for a large breed. Our general recommendation is to purchase as large of a kennel as you have space for in your yard and that you can comfortably afford.

Kennel Height – Most kennels are available in either a 4 foot or 6 foot height. For most kennels, we recommend a 6 foot height to ensure that your dog cannot escape and that it is safe from predators (coyotes, etc.).4 foot kennels are appropriate for small breeds that cannot jump very high.

  • Protection from Weather – Careful consideration should always be given to your climate and in particular, to protecting your dog from rain, snow, wind, and excessive sunshine/heat.
  • If you do not have nearby trees or a suitable that can provide shelter for your pet, we highly recommend that you consider covering at least a portion of your dog’s kennel with a weather-proof cover.

Once you have selected an appropriate kennel size and height and given consideration to protecting your pet from adverse weather, your next step is to select the material to build your kennel.

Modular Kennels – These kennels are made from pre-fabricated panels that generally measure 4 or 5 feet wide and either 4 or 6 feet high. The panels are connected together with a simple mounting bracket or clamp in various configurations to form a kennel or dog run. Specialized gate panels are available for easy access. Modular kennels have a great deal of advantages: they are very affordable, they are assembled under factory conditions so they tend to be well constructed, they can be assembled very quickly and easily, and they can be easily disassembled and reconfigured or moved if you ever need to change your kennel layout or location in the future. Modular kennels are by far our most popular type of kennel. We offer modular kennels in three grades:

Small Do-it Yourself Kennel Kits – contain all of the parts necessary to build a complete kennel. All of the parts are pre-cut and ready for assembly. Generally, boxed kennel kits are for smaller kennels up to 10 x 10′ or 5 x 15′ only and some may come complete with optional roof covers etc. Boxed kennels are a little more economical than most modular kennels but require significantly more assembly work and are available in fewer grades, sizes, configurations, and options. A few models use small 2′ wide modular panels for faster assembly. They make a good choice for most basic small backyard kennels but are not suited very well to large kennels or those who require special configurations. U-Build – The final option for building a kennel is to purchase all of the raw materials and build a kennel yourself from scratch. Unless you have prior experience working with chain link fencing and similar materials, we do not recommend this option. People selecting this option should be prepared to invest a lot of time in the planning and construction of their kennel. When time, effort, and material costs are considered, most people find that modular kennels not only end up looking more professional and offering more safety features, but they are actually cheaper than building a kennel from scratch.

The final major consideration is the material that the kennel is made out of. Kennels would be constructed with steel and should be galvanized to protect the parts from rust and corrosion. Kennel parts that are galvanized AFTER they are welded will have the best corrosion resistance.

  • Aluminum parts while resistant to corrosion are much weaker than steel and are not recommended.
  • The wire should be 8 to 12 gauge diameter (the smaller the number, the heavier and stronger the wire is – 8 gauge is the better than 12).
  • Standard chain link is generally 12 or 14 gauge.
  • Larger and more aggressive/energetic dog breeds require heavy-duty materials (we recommend 8 gauge welded wire mesh for such applications).

Powder coating adds further corrosion protection to the kennels. It also adds a very professional, attractive look.

Fence strength – How strong does your fence need to be? Obviously, every fence should be sturdy enough to withstand forces like strong winds, but some fences need more strength than others. For example, a livestock fence for your cattle enclosure requires a much stronger wire than the fencing around your vegetable garden.

Is 14 gauge wire strong enough for dogs?

Dogs can’t chew through our heavy duty metal fence 14 gauge welded wire metal fence is heavy and strong enough that dogs can’t chew through it. This fence is recommended for either the entire fence height, or the bottom 3 ft.—4 ft. Difficult to climb Polypropylene fence is recommended for dogs that like to climb.

  • Due to the plastic structure of the fence, it is difficult for dogs to get a grip on the fence and climb it.
  • If a dog is able to get a grip on the fence, it flexes and moves, making it difficult to climb.
  • Metal fence can be added at the bottom to prevent chewing.
  • Extra chew guard We use a heavy duty 8 gauge steel core metal cable along the bottom of our dog fence to keep the fence secure to the ground.

The heavy gauge metal cable can not be chewed through. Rebar ground stakes are also installed between every post to keep the fence secure.

Which is thicker 14 or 16 gauge wire?

16GA, 14GA, 10GA, Just What is the Difference?? So you have headed out panel shopping and the salesperson is telling you this panel is 14 GA, this panel is 16 GA, etc and this one is High Tensile Blah blah blah So what is the real difference or does it even matter? Well, hopefully this will help.

First, let’s tackle the “high tensile steel” conversation. Steelwork hardens, so what happens to the steel is that most of the tubbing is resized and rolled by cold forming before it is welded. This cold working raises the tensile strength of the steel ever so slightly. How steel is measured for strength, in the simplest terms, is based on a blend of yield and tensile.

It is a balance of those two factors that determine the strength of steel. If steel is too hard it becomes brittle, if it is too soft it will bend easily. If it is just right it will give and return to its original shape with normal use. So for example, if standard steel is 35,000 PSI (Pounds per square inch) yield then when you harden it, as they do in the panel industry, it may raise to say 38,000 PSI or so. So let’s talk gauge There three basic gauges used in steel tube panels typically 16 ga, 14 ga, and 10 ga. Gauges work like this; the smaller the number the thicker the steel. So 10 gauge is thicker than 16 gauge. So the question then comes, how much thicker??? 16ga steel is,065″ inches thick, that is about 1/16th of an inch thick.14 gauge in comparison is,083 inches thick which doesn’t sound like much except it is almost 30% thicker (27.6% to be exact).

Is 30% enough to make a difference? Absolutely!! 30% thicker 30% stronger 30% better. Is the panel about 30% more in the price ? Probably. Is it worth it? That is up to you. Now, 10 gauge is,120 wall thickness approx. (up to,135 wall depending on who you talk too). That means 10 Ga is 84% thicker than 16 Ga.

and 44% thicker than 14 Ga. So 10ga is by far and again much, much, stronger than either of the other panels. Sometimes you can combine them like we do. using a 10Ga pipe on the hinge side of the gate and using 14″ everywhere else.14ga is an accepted level of strength used by most commercial livestock facilities we service.

  1. Just a note that some of the cheaper panels are as light at 18ga.
  2. Which is,049 wall thickness on the steel,
  3. That is 25% thinner than even the lightest panel we carry and basically good to create a visual barrier but that is about it 😊 The problem with ultralight panels is they can collapse on an animal and create a trap causing severe injury.

There are a few other factors that can change the performance of your panel; the design of the panel and shape of the tubing can come into play when it comes to the overall structure of the product produced. Does the panel have 2 upright braces or one? maybe it has three braces and gusseted corners.

  1. The shape of the tubing can provide more strength in one direction than the other such as Prieferts panel design.
  2. So it would be fair to say that a 16 ga panel designed right would be as strong as a 14 gauge panel? Possibly, but you are better to go for weight than you design.
  3. Which brings me to one of the easiest ways to tell if one panel is thicker than the other, ask what it weighs.

Now finally 10ga panels are by far the strongest (just don’t try to move them around too much 😊). So in closing, panel design does come into play and so does coating, but, my simple recommendation is to look for a good 14 ga panel ( 16ga minimum), bare or coated (coating is required in some environments) and you will have excellent luck.

Usually, the deformed bar can be contained in a circumscribing circle 10% (with peak values of 13 or 14%) larger than the nominal size of bar. Preferred sizes of high yield reinforcing bars are 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm.

Additional sizes, not preferred, are 6 and 50. The reason for these last to being not preferred regards the availability of the material by fabricators. The following list below provides a comparison between the nominal size and the maximum size (in red are shown the non-preferred sizes):

Why Wire Gauge Is Important – While circuit breakers or wiring fuses offer good protection against overloading wires and overheating them, they are not absolute protection. Both these devices are designed to sense current overloads and to trip or “blow” before the wires can overheat to the danger point.

But they are not foolproof, and it is still important to guard against exceeding the amperage rating of any given circuit by plugging too many appliances into them. There is the potential for danger anytime a device or appliance tries to draw more power on a circuit than the wire gauge is rated for. For example, plugging a heater rated for 20 amps into a 15-amp circuit wired with 14-gauge wire poses a distinct danger.

The circuit will draw the power asked for by whatever is plugged into them and no more. So, for example, running a laptop computer with a very small amperage demand on a 20-amp circuit wired with 12-gauge wire is perfectly fine. The potential for danger is most pronounced with the use of light household extension cords.

Many a household fire has occurred when a light extension cord with 16-gauge wire is used to power a heater or heating appliance of some sort. Most manufacturers will discourage the use of any extension cords with portable heaters, but if one must be used, it has to be a heavy-duty cord with a high amperage rating that matches the amperage of the appliance and of the circuit it is plugged into.
